The philosophy that made
your practice
Studied at its source — with the living scholars of the tradition that shaped modern yoga.
from Mysore scholars in the living tradition
Śrī Tirumala Kṛṣṇamācārya, the scholar whom many call the father of modern yoga, taught Pattabhi Jois, B.K.S. Iyengar, T.K.V. Desikachar, and Indra Devi, and their lineages together account for the majority of postural yoga practiced anywhere in the world today.
Śrī Kṛṣṇamācārya was formed within the Śrīvaiṣṇava tradition from childhood and continued his education at the Parakāla Maṭha in Mysore, a monastery rooted in Rāmānuja's Viśiṣṭādvaita philosophy. When you study the sacred yoga texts in our programs, you are receiving these texts as they have always been understood within the tradition that formed him, taught by scholars who stand in that same tradition today.
The Scholars
Our scholars are not academics who study yoga from the outside. They stand within the living tradition that produced Śrī Kṛṣṇamācārya, curated by Dr. Alwar from the Sanskrit community of Mysore, and teaching these texts as they have always been taught: with depth, precision, and the intimacy of a tradition transmitted person to person across generations.
Son of Śrī U.Ve. Prof. M.A. Lakṣmīthāthāchārya Swami, Dr. Alwar grew up deep within the Nāthamuni Sampradāya, formed by the same exacting standards of Vedic education and śāstric learning that have shaped this lineage for generations. He does not teach these texts as literature or philosophy from the outside. He transmits them as they have been understood within this paramparā for nearly a millennium, with the depth, precision, and warmth of a scholar who has lived inside them his entire life. He is Senior Professor at the Mahārāja's Sanskrit College, Mysore, and Managing Trustee of the Saṃskṛti Foundation.
Dr. Nagaraja Rao brings a lifetime of scholarship to the Yoga Sūtras, the Bhagavad Gītā, and the Upaniṣads. Trained in both traditional gurukula and modern academic settings, he has taught at the University of Chicago, held a fellowship at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and been honoured by the Sahitya Akademi for his contributions to translation. He is honorary editor of Sudharma, the world's only daily newspaper published in Sanskrit. Now in his eighties, he continues to teach with undiminished clarity and warmth. His particular gift is making the subtle clear without making it simple, bringing precision and philosophical depth while communicating in fluent English with an accessibility that is rare among Sanskrit scholars of his stature.
Trained in traditional gurukula education in Vedas, Vedānta, and Yogaśāstra at Veda Vijñāna Gurukulam, Bengaluru, Dr. Jayaraman subsequently earned a PhD in Sanskrit from the University of Madras, specialising in Tantrayukti, ancient Indian methods of textual construction and methodology. He served for over a decade as Director of Research at the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram, Chennai, and is currently Professor and Dean in the Division of Yoga and Spirituality at SVYASA Deemed University. The author of twenty books and nineteen peer-reviewed articles on yoga and Sanskrit literature, he is also the creator of Yoga-Vaiśāradī, a searchable digital repository of classical yoga texts, and Yogasya Bhāṣā, a self-learning program in Sanskrit and yoga.

The Courses
The Yoga Sūtras are the philosophical backbone of everything you practice. Every breath linked to movement, every instruction to still the mind, every idea of what yoga is actually for — all of it traces back to this text. Yet most practitioners have never studied it directly, verse by verse, with a scholar who has spent a lifetime inside it.
Dr. Nagaraja Rao takes the entire text verse by verse, weaving in Sāṅkhya, the Upaniṣads, the Bhagavad Gītā, and allied commentaries to show how the Sūtras actually work — in the mind, in relationships, in daily life. His gift is making the subtle clear without making it simple.
This is not academic yoga philosophy. It is the text as this lineage has always read it.

The Bhagavad Gītā is the most widely read philosophical text in the yoga world — and the most frequently misunderstood. Stripped of its context, it becomes a collection of inspiring passages. Studied within its tradition, it is something far more precise: a complete teaching on the nature of action, devotion, knowledge, and liberation, addressed to a practitioner standing at the threshold of practice.
Dr. M.A. Alwar does not teach the Gītā as literature or philosophy from the outside. He transmits it as it has been understood within this paramparā for nearly a millennium — with the depth, precision, and warmth of a scholar who has lived inside this text his entire life.
To study the Bhagavad Gītā with Dr. Alwar is to receive it through the same philosophical understanding that guided Śrī Kṛṣṇamācārya — and that has shaped the yoga the world now practices.

Sāṅkhya is the philosophical system that underlies the Yoga Sūtras, the Bhagavad Gītā, and virtually every other foundational text in the tradition. Its vocabulary — puruṣa, prakṛti, the three guṇas, buddhi, ahaṃkāra — runs through everything you practice. This course gives you that foundation, verse by verse through the Sāṅkhya Kārikā.
Sāṅkhya is the theory of yoga. Yoga is its practical application. You cannot fully understand one without the other. Dr. Rao makes this technically precise system genuinely clear — with examples, metaphors, and the kind of depth that only a scholar formed inside the tradition can offer.
