About the Conference

For ten days in Gokulam, Mysore, we practice Ashtanga Yoga, study with Sanskrit scholars and teachers from the community, and have time for questions and conversation about the yoga traditions taught here.

Every January, students from different countries gather in Mysore. The city has a long history of yoga teaching and Sanskrit scholarship, and the conference gives us an opportunity to learn from people who have spent their lives studying within these traditions.

We welcome all sincere students, whether you are new to the practice or have been studying yoga for many years.

Scholars and Lectures

Each afternoon we meet with Sanskrit scholars, yoga teachers, and elders from Mysore. Their lectures draw on years of study in yoga philosophy, history, and the traditions they teach.

Lectures generally last 60 to 90 minutes, followed by questions and group discussion. Students come from many countries and bring their own experiences to the conversation.

Past speakers have included Śrī B.N.S. Iyengar; a daughter of Śrī Kṛṣṇamācārya; the Maharaja of Mysore; heads of long-standing religious lineages; college principals; and Sanskrit scholars whose work is known well beyond India.

In 2026, the conference closed with a visit to the Lakshminarayana Ashram and a lecture by Dr. M. A. Alwar. The 2027 closing-day arrangements will be announced when confirmed.

From Past Participants

"If I'm ever going to find out what's true and real about Mysore and where this came from, it's going to be through this conference."

Christian Goldberg  ·  Missoula, Montana

"What we were looking forward to most was being face to face with these doctors and scholars. And when you meet them, you realize how humble these people are. They know so much and they are so easy to approach. It makes you think, you really know nothing at all. And this is just a journey to start."

Meng Wei Chin  ·  Taiwan

"The quality of the conference, the quality of the teaching, the quality of all the people here: that inspiration, that enthusiasm for life, is still there. To have that again, in a different way, is really beautiful."

Rowan Burkam  ·  UK

Full FAQ for India travel

Andrew Eppler, founder of Mysore Yoga Traditions

Join me in Mysore for ten days of yoga practice and study with some of the teachers and Sanskrit scholars who have taught me so much.

Come meet the Sanskrit community and learn how yoga is understood by the people who have studied and taught these traditions for a lifetime. We will sit with the elders, ask questions, and hear their views on practice and philosophy. The Sanskrit word paramparā refers to knowledge passed from one generation to the next. That is something we have the opportunity to experience together in Mysore.

I first visited Mysore in 1990 and I have been returning to study ever since. I have made a study of the yoga culture there and the background of Ashtanga Yoga, and I made my first documentary about it, Mysore Yoga Traditions. What you get at this conference is the benefit of those years and the relationships I have formed along the way.

During the ten days I will teach āsana, prāṇāyāma, and mudrā, sharing methods that I have studied with my teachers and used with students over the years. We will also visit places connected with Mysore’s yoga and Sanskrit traditions. Accommodation, meals, and transportation for our excursions are arranged for those joining the all-inclusive program.

I hope you can join us.

Andrew
