Prerequisite
Classical suggestions for beginning pranayama: Firmness in asana practice, control of the senses and food habits.

This is four weeks of prāṇāyāma, the yoga of the breath, as Śrī B.N.S. Iyengar teaches it in Mysore.

This course has been created from three decades of practicing the prāṇāyāma system of Śrī B.N.S. Iyengar. Andrew offers his personal experience and tips for getting started in this sacred art.

Every technique is shown on video and explained in writing, so the practice can continue on its own long after the four weeks end. A month is enough to learn the material. What it opens takes longer, and there is no hurry about that.

The Four Weeks
1
Week One

Introduction and Bandha

Preparation for a rigorous system. Andrew gives the techniques he has found most effective for readying the body: mudrā and bandha as the groundwork, and the Compression and Vacuum exercise that brings the locks to life.

2
Week Two

Vishama Vritti and Nadi Shodhana

The first two prāṇāyāma, practiced on the foundation of the bandhas. You build to a steady ten-round practice and gain the retention that everything after this depends on.

3
Week Three

Bhastrika and Shitali

Heat and cooling, learned in warm and cold conditions, with the cautions that keep that exploration safe.

4
Week Four

Shakti Chalana and Upasana

The final step of the system and the 48-day practice that completes it, set within the lineage that carries these techniques and the cautions the deeper stages demand.

Who This Is For

When is a student ready for prāṇāyāma? The Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā answers it plainly. When firmness is established in āsana, and when the senses and the habits of eating are under control, one may begin.

In practice that means a body already prepared: comfortable with a full Primary Series, able to hold a steady pace for well over an hour.

There are gentle breathing exercises anyone can practice, and those are genuinely universal. This system asks for more. It is for sincere students who want to enter trance and to work with the raising of kuṇḍalinī, which the texts describe as a coiled energy at the base of the spine.

If that describes your practice, the breath is the natural next step. If you are newer to āsana, build that foundation first, and this course will be here when you are ready.

A Note from Andrew

Guruji B.N.S. Iyengar's 100th birthday celebration is this year, 2026. He is the oldest living teacher of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. Whatever this course contains, it is a distant second from sitting face to face with the old master himself. Anyone who is able to make the journey to India and study directly at the source is strongly encouraged to do so. The razor sharp intellect of Guruji has a way of imparting things that no video course could possibly touch.

For those who cannot make that journey, this is my humble offering to help you begin. I offer a free one-to-one Zoom call for anyone who joins this course and has questions they would like to ask.

This is the prāṇāyāma system as I learned it from my teacher, taught in the order and the ratios he refined over decades, along with the preparations I have found most useful in my own practice. Take your time with it, keep the ratios conservative until they are easy, and let each stage settle before you move to the next. What is built slowly stays.
