The Pranayama System of Sri B.N.S. Iyengar
with Andrew Eppler

असतो मा सद्गमय · तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय · मृत्योर्मा अमृतं गमय

Lead me from the unreal to the real, from darkness to light, from death to immortality.

This is a complete system of prāṇāyāma as taught by Śrī B.N.S. Iyengar, the oldest living teacher of Ashtanga Vinyāsa Yoga, set down across four weeks of guided practice. It is the next step for practitioners already established in āsana, the branch of yoga that turns an athlete into a yogi.

Andrew Eppler studied this method directly with Śrī B.N.S. Iyengar in Mysore and has practiced prāṇāyāma for over twenty-five years. He teaches it here in the order and the ratios his teacher refined over decades, with the background philosophy and the foundational techniques that make the practice both safe and effective.

Every technique is shown on video and explained in writing, so the practice can continue on its own long after the four weeks end. One month is enough to learn the material; the understanding it opens unfolds over years, and there is no rush.

The Four Weeks
1
Week One

Introduction and Bandha

Mudrā and Bandha as the groundwork of the system, the Compression/Vacuum exercise that awakens the locks, and the daily schedule that prepares the body for prāṇāyāma.

2
Week Two

Viṣama Vṛtti and Nāḍī Śodhana

The first two prāṇāyāma, practiced on the foundation of the Bandhas: building a steady ten-round practice and gaining the ability to retain the breath that the later steps require.

3
Week Three

Bhastrikā and Śītalī

Two tools of heat and cooling added to the foundation, learned directly through practice in warm and cold conditions, with the cautions that keep that exploration safe.

4
Week Four

Śakti Cālana and Upāsana

The final step of the system and the intensive 48-day practice that completes it, set within the lineage that carries these techniques and the cautions the deeper stages demand.

Who This Is For

This is an advanced course, not a starting point. It is meant for practitioners already established in āsana, comfortable with a full Primary Series and able to hold a steady pace for well over an hour.

If that describes your practice, prāṇāyāma is the natural next step. If you are newer to āsana, build that foundation first; this course will be here when you are ready.

A Note from Andrew

This is the prāṇāyāma system as I learned it from my teacher, taught in the order and the ratios he refined over decades. Take your time with it, keep the ratios conservative until they are easy, and let each stage settle before you move to the next. What is built slowly stays.
