Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali
with Dr. H. V. Nagaraj Rao

अथ योगानुशासनम्

atha yogānuśāsanam — now begins the discipline of yoga.

A twenty-two-lesson study of the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali, taught by Dr. H. V. Nagaraj Rao — a master Sanskrit scholar from the heart of the Mysore yoga tradition. The lessons move sūtra by sūtra and pāda by pāda, drawing in supporting voices from the wider stream of Indian thought, including Sāṅkhya, Vedānta, and the Bhagavad Gītā.

The teaching is direct, structured, and grounded — bringing 196 aphorisms into dialogue with the daily life of the practitioner, and tracing the arc from the first definition of yoga as the stilling of the mind to the final liberation of kaivalya.

A Note from Andrew

Thank you for joining this course.

The Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali are among the most important texts in the yoga tradition — a precise and practical map of the mind and the path toward liberation. I hope what you find here continues to unfold in your own practice long after these lessons end.

These teachings come from Dr. H. V. Nagaraj Rao. The written notes are my own — any errors or inaccuracies are mine alone, and no reflection on the depth of his scholarship.
